What is interlibrary loan?

Interlibrary loan is a cooperative resource sharing service that enables us to borrow materials we do not own from other libraries.

Who is eligible to use interlibrary loan services?

Interlibrary loan services are available to all Grand Island Public Library card holders in good standing.

What is the cost?

Interlibrary loan requests are placed for a fee of $2.00 plus one-way postage per item. Materials are sent via USPS Library Mail so postage costs are minimal. The $2.00 fee must be paid at the time the request is made; postage will be due when you pick up the item.

What materials are available through ILL?

A wide range of materials is generally available, although individual lending libraries may have policies that restrict the loan of certain items such as microfilm or reference books. We will do our best to obtain the items you request. 

Microfilm rolls may be requested from the Nebraska State Historical Society at a charge of $4.28 per reel. Contact Elle Supencheck directly to request this service.


What are my responsibilities?

Interlibrary loan is a courtesy extended from one library to another. We ask our patrons to respond in kind by searching Grand Island Public Library resources first, respecting the lending library’s rules, making prompt use of the material, and returning the materials on time.

Borrowers are responsible for the return of borrowed materials to Grand Island Public Library by the lender’s due date and will be assessed the cost of replacement for damaged, lost, or unreturned items.


How do I place an ILL request?

Interlibrary loan request forms are available at the Circulation Desk (front desk) and the Reference Desk at the library. You may also contact library staff by phone at (308) 385-5333.

How long does it take to receive ILL materials?

Although your interlibrary loan may arrive sooner, it’s a good idea to allow seven to ten days. Please keep in mind that delivery is dependent on numerous factors including location of lending library, mail service, and type of item. Please plan ahead if you need an item to arrive by a specific date.

How will I be notified when my ILL arrives?

You will be called at the phone number you provide on your request form.

Where do I pick up and return my ILL?

Interlibrary loans can be picked up at the Circulation Desk (front desk). Return borrowed items to the library just as you would our own materials: place in any return drop box or hand to a front desk staff member. Each borrowed item will have an orange band on it; this band must be intact upon return.

How long may I keep the material?

Due dates are determined by the lending library, so they vary. Most lenders allow three to four weeks. The due date will be noted on the orange band when you pick up your item.

Is my ILL renewable?

Renewals occur at the discretion of the lending library. Request a renewal from us by phone, e-mail, or in-person before the item's due date, so we can contact the lending library for approval.
